Butterflies Lingering Over the Flowers
Chinoiserie Art Diptych
In the Chinese poetic tradition, butterflies do not visit flowers, they linger. This hand-painted Chinoiserie artwork by artist and Sinologist Marcie Woodard captures that ancient, unhurried relationship between wing and petal in gouache on gold silk paper.
This piece is one half of a Chinoiserie art diptych, two panels, one yin and one yang, conceived as a single vision. In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang are complementary forces, each one the other’s completion. Collected together, the pair is whole. Collected separately, each carries the quiet knowledge that its other half exists.
Executed in gouache on gold silk paper, a surface that demanded patience and rewarded it in kind. Silk holds pigment unlike anything else. What you see here is the result of that negotiation: between medium and hand, between a centuries-old visual language and the painter who chose to work inside it.
Butterflies Lingering Over the Flowers is available as a complete Chinoiserie diptych or as individual yin and yang panels, a distinguished addition to any interior design collection or fine art portfolio.
